With just some basic sharpening knowledge and a couple of simple tools, however, any hunter can be sure to have their knife ready.
Testing Your Blade
A number of simple tests exist to test the sharpness of your hunting knife. Some outdoorsmen test a knife’s sharpness by shaving a small patch of hair on their arms or hands. This test is quick and effective but, lets be honest, a little dangerous for a novice. For those not confident that they can tell their blade is dull, there are blade edge testing kits available at through outdoor equipment retailers. These kits can be expensive.
Experienced hunters can often tell if a blade is dull just by looking at it. To visually look for dullness, hold the blade with the edge in line with a strong light source and move it back and forth a bit. If you see a reflection or glint then you have a dull blade. If all else fails, walk into your outdoor goods store and ask a professional to help you assess knife sharpness.
The Right Tools
Once you have concluded that your knife needs sharpening, you will need to get your hands on the right sharpening equipment. Sharpening stones are effective, commonly used, and come in a variety of styles and sizes. When purchasing a stone, look for one made from compounds with a relative hardness of 9 or higher. Stones made from bonded aluminum oxide or silicon carbide work very well, as does silicon carbide sandpaper glued to a wooden block or something similar.
A sharpening guide is a clamp-like tool that attaches to the blade of the knife and aids in controlling the angle of the blade. This may be helpful for notice knife sharpeners because they are the only way to guarantee an accurate sharpening angle. More advanced hunters may find them unnecessary.

There are three basic polishing strokes you can use to finish the sharpening process - on-stroke, off-stroke, or circular strokes. The off-stroke is the easiest technique for beginners. Begin to grind away the burr made by the first stone you used. The burr should gradually begin to fade. Once it is almost undetectable, switch to the circular stroke and finish grinding off the old scratch pattern. Finish up by using light strokes to get rid of the remaining burr. At this point your blade should be extremely sharp, with no burr and only micro-serrations.
Dont be afraid to ask professionals for help. Woodworkers and butchers are usually more qualified in the art of sharpening than knife makers or collectors. Ask one in your area if they can assist you or provide you with some simple techniques.
It is important for all your hunting tools to be in prime condition before you go on a trip, and your knife is no exception. With these tools and proper techniques you can effectively sharpen your knife before or during your trip and not have to worry about the problems a dull blade can cause.

Recently I visited Hawaii for the first time. There were a lot of “firsts” on that trip, including snorkeling. Some friends and I were in an absolutely beautiful cove where the water was completely clear and there were what seemed like thousands of fish and colorful coral. We had to kayak out there (another first) and passed a pod of dolphins.
The thing is, I hadn’t really thought too much about snorkeling one way or another because I’m a pretty strong swimmer, until I was actually standing on some wet rocks, with my fins on, trying to maneuver in the water without stepping on sea urchins or coral. What made it more complicated is because of the amount of coral, there was really no way to step on the bottom once you got in the water.
Luckily, the friends I was with had snorkeled before and were able to give me some advice. The most important advice was “relax.”
It still took me awhile. I ended up coughing and choking on a lot of sea water before I finally figured out what I needed to do — which was basically put my head straight down and stop fighting the breathing apparatus.
In other words, relax.
So, what does this have to do with your business? Sometimes you need to relax in your business as well.
A lot of us started our businesses because we didn’t want to work for someone else and we wanted to do what we love. We probably wanted to set our own hours and be in control of our destiny.

And, I had to take relaxing one step further. When I first started delegating, I was nervous. Is the work getting done, or not getting done? I would wake up in the middle of the night wondering if tasks were being completed or not. Then I wondered if I should check on the person doing it — should I get up and email them now or call in the morning or am I being paranoid?
Again, once I learned to relax and let things happen, then everything started to fall into place. I found ways to keep tabs on tasks without micromanaging (and allowing me to sleep at night).
When you start to study billionaires and other successful business people, you realize a lot them view business as fun, or as a game. They’re enjoying themselves while they run their business (or businesses). And maybe that’s one of the reasons they’ve been so successful.
But most of all, when I started to relax about running my business, that’s when it became far more enjoyable.

Some of the tools you will need are safety glasses, hammer, chisel and a crow bar. The quarry area is littered with flat slabs or plates of sedentary rock that was formed on and ancient lake bed. When the fish or plant life died they fell to the lake floor and were subsequently buried with mud and silt. Pick up the slabs of rock and split them endwise to release the fossil treasures.
Some of the rarer fossil finds have commanded up to a quarter of a million dollars. The fossils value is determined by its rarity of the specimen, the size, and the quality of the bone definition. Wyoming is considered the fish fossil capital of the world.
Of course there really is no area of the world where you absolutely cannot find fossils. Many have literally stumbled across very valuable finds when just out fishing or hiking or rock climbing. While searching for fossil fish may be a bit difficult for those who are new to the activity, with the right guide and research manual you may find that this is a hobby that is well worth the pursuit.
